A short chat through whatever's on your mind: a tech project you're thinking about, something already underway, or a question about how to approach a problem.
Why you would need a fractional CTO in New Zealand
A fractional CTO is a technical leader who works inside your business, taking full accountability for your technology without the cost of a full-time hire.
In New Zealand, plenty of businesses have a technology function that's too important to leave unmanaged but not big enough to justify a permanent executive. Often the product was built quickly to get to market and now needs to handle growth. Sometimes legacy systems are slowing the business down, or investors are about to look closely at the technology. And for many Kiwi companies the next market is Australia.
I've led technology for 253 companies in Sydney over 16 years, from startups to enterprises. Most of the problems New Zealand companies bring to me are ones I've already solved on the other side of the Tasman, like systems that have outgrown the way they were built, or vendors who aren't delivering what was promised. I lead every engagement personally and bring a 26-strong engineering team across software, AI, cloud, and security when the work needs one.
If you're planning to sell into Australia, you'll be working with someone who already knows how Australian customers buy technology and what they'll ask before they sign.

FAQ
What are the signs my New Zealand business needs a fractional CTO?
Common triggers: technical decisions are having consequences nobody in the room can properly evaluate, an engineering team lacks senior direction, investment or technical due diligence is coming up, or your systems have outgrown the way they were first built. Planning a move into Australia is another common one.
Why work with a CTO based in Sydney rather than New Zealand?
New Zealand has a small pool of experienced technology executives, and most of them are in full-time roles. I've spent 16 years leading technology for 253 Sydney companies, from startups to regulated businesses and large enterprises, so you get someone who has already seen most of the problems you're likely to hit. I can also bring my own engineers when the work needs building. Sydney is two hours behind Auckland and Wellington, so I'm available through your whole working day.
How is this different from hiring a full-time CTO in New Zealand?
A full-time CTO in New Zealand typically costs NZ$200,000 to NZ$400,000 a year once bonus and KiwiSaver contributions are factored in. A fractional CTO gives you the same level of decision-making and accountability for a set number of days a month, at a fraction of the cost.
What kinds of organisations do you typically work with?
Any organisation that is making significant technology decisions and needs someone senior enough to make them well. Some have engineering teams already, some don't. Some are mid-project, some are just starting. The common thread is they need a technical leader who's accountable for the outcome.
What happens if we already have an in-house engineering team or a vendor?
I work closely with them, setting direction and checking that decisions and delivery are sound. If you don't have an engineering team in place, I can bring my own team of engineers to fill that gap rather than leaving you to hire and manage one separately.
